Meet the Team: Hakan Ozcelik

Meet Hakan Ozcelik who has recently joined Datamine Australia as our ESG Enterprise Solutions Manager. Hakan brings 30 years of experience in the Digital Transformation of Engineering Design, Operations (Manufacturing/Production), and Asset Lifecycle Management.

Get to know Hakan a little better through the interview below:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I was born in Turkey. My parents decided to emigrate to Australia in 1972. I grew up and lived in Sydney until 1997, then moved to Adelaide for 12 years to kick off my employer’s SA/WA business, and later relocated to Melbourne in 2009 where I still live.

After graduating as an Aerospace Engineer in 1992, I worked with Boeing for a few years, after which I joined the Dassault Systèmes Master Distributor (Concentric Asia Pacific) for 17 years, initially as an Application Engineer, followed by an Enterprise Solutions Consultant role in a BD capacity. Following that, I progressed to Direct Sales roles at Siemens Digital Industries Software and AVEVA over a further 11 years.

All being involved with software enabling clients to progressively digitalize their end-to-end engineering design, manufacturing/production operations with what we now call “digital twins”, and underpinning these with the platforms to manage the information, data, processes, and workflows to fulfill these activities effectively while minimising risk.

Since 2014, I’ve been involved with several client projects extending the use of these technologies beyond their normal purpose for saving energy, reducing emissions, increasing safety, and reducing waste. The strong drive and satisfaction felt in these engagements, led me to branch into ESG & GRC (Governance, Risk & Compliance) technology companies in recent years, with Direct Sales roles at SPHERA and Diligent Corp.

Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on in a few sentences and how you help them improve?

A key challenge I consult with my clients is helping them realise or mitigate strategic, business, and commercial risks caused by delays and/or impediments in their intended Digital Transformation journey.

I typically help clients improve – by listening and identifying strategic, operational, and business pains; help them quantify positive business outcomes by addressing these with respect to productivity, risk, and cost; then consultatively work with them to find solutions that help them achieve those outcomes.

What inspired you to come to Datamine?

I’m excited to join Datamine for its industry reputation, agility, customer focus, business model, and leadership who are industry experienced practitioners. Being a key driver of our new ESG Business Division is an opportunity and a privilege. Providing both personal growth and the means to make a genuine difference to clients’ ESG & Sustainability strategy, business objectives, and journey.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?

I’m passionate about being an integral part of my clients’ transformational change. Seeding, nurturing, and working closely with them, while witnessing positive business impacts & outcomes, through that change, is satisfying and a privilege to experience.

What are your best memories from your career?

The hundreds of amazing people I met and the incredible places I experienced in the hyper-intensive first 5 years of my early Application Engineer role, where I travelled globally for 51 months of those 5 years.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I often hike at night for Astrophotography. I have keen interests in Aerospace Technology, Astronomy & Astrophotography, Geopolitics, and Investing.

A fun fact relating to Astronomy:

Our Earth and Solar System reside in a Galaxy called the “Milky Way”. This Milk Way contains an estimated 200,000,000,000 stars of which our Sun is but one. Looking further afield – the nearest Galaxy to the Milky Way is 236,000,000,000,000,000 km away, while the next nearest is 662,000,000,000,000,000 km.
Between us and these – there is nothing but the emptiness of Space!
