We are pleased to highlight a valued, very knowledgeable member of the Datamine consulting team, Andre Racilan. Andre has been a Mining Engineer at Datamine for 2 years and is located in the Perth office. Get to know him a little better through the interview below:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I was born and raised in Brazil. I started my career in early 2013 working in South Africa for one year and then coming back to Brazil, where I worked in both open pit and underground operations. I was mostly involved in daily operations, short and long term planning helping to deliver daily production and improving mine planning routines and process flows. I’ve been with Datamine based in Perth for almost 2 years now, supporting clients and helping them to implement and develop mine planning processes using Datamine solutions.

Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on in a few sentences and how you help them improve?

Understanding client’s requirements and their operations is key to deliver a successful implementation and provide a smooth experience using Datamine solutions. The main challenge is to translate these needs into the solutions environment and keep improving the products to add value to their processes. At the same time, constant communication is important to identify any issues and potential improvements in both the products and client’s mine planning processes.

What inspired your career in this industry?

I’ve been naturally inclined to follow an engineering related career since I can remember. The fact that I was born and spent most of my life in a very traditional mining district in Brazil influenced the choice towards mining. It is surely an industry that aggregates almost every aspect of engineering at the same time and is one of the most challenging industries out there, facing technical, environmental, and social challenges on a daily basis.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?

Influencing positively in any mine planning workflow and perceive real and tangible improvements is probably the most satisfying aspect of this job. When a client says that we’ve saved some time or made their processes easier, it’s always a very good feedback to hear.

What are your best memories from your career?

I have a good amount of interesting memories in my career so far. Having spent some time working in the amazon region in Brazil is one of them. But I think one of the most interesting ones, was a training/workshop about Mineral tailings storage facilities in the United States in 2016, where I had the opportunity to know and work with several different professionals from around the world and surely learned a lot.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I used to be part of a rock band back in Brazil.
