Meet Gabriel Duarte who has recently joined Datamine Australia as a Mining Consultant. Get to know him a little better through the interview below:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a Mining Engineer and I graduated in 2018 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. I started my professional career at RUC Cementation Mining in 2019, working with the production crew at an underground gold mine in Leinster, Western Australia.

In 2020, I joined Glencore’s Graduate Program in Queensland and worked at three mine sites: Clermont Open Cut, Oaky Creek North (underground) and Newlands Open Cut. I was responsible for short-term planning activities, monitoring daily pit operations and delivering weekly mine plans, schedules and mine designs. In addition, I worked on haulage optimization projects for short-term and medium-term planning.

I began seeking work as a consultant and have now joined the Datamine team in Perth to deal with different clients and projects in Western Australia.

Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on in a few sentences and how you help them improve?

I’m just starting my first consulting role, but I believe understanding the clients’ needs can be one of the biggest challenges. Clients are always looking for improvements in their operations, but a lot of times they do not know the root cause of a problem, so they hire a consulting service to work on a solution. This solution might be related to different assumptions and require a good understanding of the whole situation.

What inspired your career in this industry?

The number of opportunities around the world and the good financial situation offered by a career in mining inspired me to become a Mining Engineer.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?

Overcoming new challenges and solving problems on a daily basis, which makes me always look for different ways to improve my personal and technical skills.

What are your best memories from your career?

Being exposed to mine production tasks on site while working with production crew at underground and surface operations.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’m Brazilian and a terrible soccer player.
