Jamieson Woolcock has recently started at the Datamine Perth office as a geology consultant and comes from a background of Gold exploration and open pit mining in the Western Australian Southern Goldfields.

Get to know Jamieson a little better through the interview below:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a Geologist with a B.Sc majoring in Geology from the University of Adelaide having graduated in 2018. My path to geology wasn’t straight through. I was first introduced to geology as an elective when I started a biology degree. I found it interesting and a couple of years later I started my geology degree.

My first mining job was vacation work in a South Australian mineral sand mine. In my second year and since then I’ve worked in exploration for Gold at Norseman and in nickel laterite open pit mining at Ravensthorpe.

Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on in a few sentences and how you help them improve?

I’m new to consulting but I’ve always enjoyed the part of my roles where I got to teach and help others. I’d like to embrace that attitude and use my technical skills to help clients unlock their own potential by actively listening to their needs and collaborating to find an effective solution.

What inspired your career in this industry?

I’ve always had a deep interest in Earth sciences and the environment, so Geology was a natural choice. In the mining industry, I’ve been able to direct my enthusiasm towards a career.

Since I started in the industry, I’ve always enjoyed the software side of the role and the way it enables me to visualize and interpret what’s happening in the ground. Datamine is the package I’ve used the most in my job and I was always impressed by its capability. The opportunity to work here was fantastic and I’m really happy to be here.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?

I’ve drawn great satisfaction from being a part of evolving projects and learning about the orebodies. From collecting samples and logging on the rig to seeing a mine develop over time it’s always been fulfilling to watch the progress of something I’ve been a part of.

What are your best memories from your career?

My best memories come from great colleagues who have become good personal friends. For me, the team I work with is one of the most important aspects of a job as it enables me to perform better and take greater enjoyment from my job.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I follow Formula 1 (Go Ferrari!) and take my own car (a VW Golf GTI) to track days at the local race track. It’s great fun, you can go as fast as you like and see what your car is capable of in the safety of a closed track.
